X-Men: Apocalypse has just began filming people, and I could not be more excited for it. I truly hope this is not the last of this “young X-Men” trilogy that Fox has been rolling with for a while now. Then again, I could be wrong considering the name of the film itself is Apocalypse, and I seriously doubt that only refers to the villain. However, unfortunately, we have a long while until the film releases on May 27th of 2016. Until then, there is much to look forward to like trailers, official stock photos, cast information, comic adaptation news and so much more to cover for the next year or so. However, the thing I am looking forward to most is how Apocalypse’s mechanical suit will look. I don’t think I am the only one though….
And so, finally, we have our first official look at the movie. Bryan Singer, who’s both directing and writing the film, has revealed a photo of Nightcrawler, portrayed by young actor Kodi Smit-Mcphee, and it definitely looks bad-ass.
I can see why Singer picked this somewhat unknown actor to play such an iconic character to the X-Men fan base. He, simply put and meaning no offense, just looks the part. His facial structure and overall posture is just really reminiscent of not only Alan Cumming (X2’s Nighcrawler), but also of the comic book version. What I like most about this new look is he doesn’t have those weird tattoos all over his body and face like Alan Cumming had in X2. I never really saw the point in those tattoos, considering Nightcrawler’s skin was always just a plain dark blue in both the comics and cartoons. Then again, why am I complaining? That’s been fixed. The clothing is definitely spot on to the character as he wears a casual blue trench coat and brown pants. I was never really a fan of the striped clothing Cumming had on his portrayal as the character. One other thing I would like to mention is that we can’t really see his tail that well, the dark background behind Nightcrawler shades it. All I can see is they kept the traditional look of the character, with the knife like end that is able to pierce anything. Moving on, the dark-blue skin is spot on and the overall look of the character’s face is frightening. Now, I’m not saying the actor is himself frightening, just the character. And that’s a good thing because, in the comics, Nightcrawler was always this really lonely teenager that was always ashamed of his appearance and would often scare people unintentionally. Singer really nailed it on that end without a doubt.
So, overall, I love the new look. I’m very happy that they are still rolling with tradition and not taking any big risks just yet. Now, don’t get me wrong, we haven’t even seen the movie yet. Not even a trailer. But by the looks of it, I think we, the fans, are in the clear officially. We all love you, Bryan Singer.
